As a current coach my philosophy is that sport is a means to provide every child with the opportunity for maximum personal growth and development in their lives physically, socially, and mentally. I believe good people will make great athletes and the foundation to the success of any program is based around positive relationships and hard work. At a school level, I believe there is a place for all individuals on a team. However if spots are limited athletes will be selected based upon attitude, commitment, work ethic and potential; talent is usually considered last. Therefore as a future teacher I would like to incorporate my coaching philosophy into my teaching. Just like in coaching, as teachers we need to make sure that every child is presented with the opportunity for maximum growth and development in their lives. As well that to achieve any success in either coaching or teaching is based around creating a positive relationship with the students.
Furthermore I believe that people are by the very nature, inquisitive, and therefore as people we are always seeking for answers to anything and everything. As a future teacher I believe that the goal of education should be to encourage seeking answers, as it is in this way that we advance. I hope to facilitate this advancement of knowledge in a fun and creative way, and in such making sure to incorporate everything that I learn on my journey to becoming a great teacher, such things as incorporating Multiple Intelligences into my lesson planning and educating the students to the best of my ability, because we need to recognize that one size fits all does not work anymore, that each individual learns best at his own pace and his own ways and it is our job to help the students realize the different ways they learn and accommodate them in such ways.
Additionally whether in the classroom or outside classroom my goal is to encourage thinking in rational ways, to relate things to the students personal lives, so that students can apply it in other, unfamiliar situations, rather than having the students just memorizing information as facts. With that being said I believe that there is a need for both Direct and Indirect teaching methods required in a classroom, it depends on the students, and the subjects the students are learning. Even though I am not a fan of giving students lectures I would rather have them collaborate and learn from projects and group work, I do though agree that there are times that direct teaching is required in a classroom with giving lectures to students like in either history class or English. With that being said I believe that Direct teaching should not overpower the Indirect methods that allow students to experience and learn on their own and feel ownership of their education, as well allow them to work in groups and learn to share responsibility and work as a team.
In conclusion I truly do believe that Piaget said it best, “The principal goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done."
