Professional Goals
1. Goal: Enhance student engagement by utilizing and creating great classroom management strategies such as policies and transitions to implement within my classroom.
#1:Rationale:
I believe that this will be a great goal for myself as I strongly believe that the root of student engagement is creating a great classroom management routine. When establishing classroom management with your students you are setting expectations of your class that you wish your students to follow. I believe that classroom management routine entails several different things that help you manage your class such as stating the policies at the start that you will have your students follow, as well as making sure to stay consistent with those policies everyday with each class and each student. Classroom management can also be as simple as demonstrating the acceptable behavior to the students by modeling it within your class. Lastly, I also believe that transitions are also a major part of any teachers classroom management, having great transitions from lesson to lesson, as well as from learning activity to a great closure will have an impact on how much your class will stay engaged or not.

2. Goal: Increase participation in PE using leadership roles.
#2: Rationale:
Allowing students to have ownership of their education will increase student’s engagement in such lessons as they will feel pride in it and therefore will increase their participation as they would feel as they are part of the learning and teaching process and not simply being taught. In PE, students will initially be taught the basics of the sport and taught the expectations related to each sport so that at the midpoint in each unit, the teacher can take a more facilitator role and the students can begin to set up, organize and start each day with limited involvement from the teacher to create ownership of their learning within each student.

3. Goal: Create more student-led learning rather than teacher-centred lessons. (“Facilitative Learning”)

#3: Rationale:
By doing this I believe that we will create more life-long learners in our classrooms. I believe that in a student-led class, the room is designed to suit the student’s needs, classrooms can seem busy, and teachers act more like coaches especially in a physical education class. Furthermore, I also believe that this will also encourage students to be more self aware and advocate for their own needs and also we as teachers help to lead and coach our students as well as inspire them to find their own passion in the unit that we may be in rather then force it upon them. Especially in a subject such as physical education where we see a lot of students come out not only dissatisfied with their learning but also regret ever taking it.

Strategies (How I will go about achieving my goals?)
• Strategies for addressing Goal #1:
By establishing the set policies with the students at the beginning of the year, making the students and parents aware of set policies right at the start will increase your chances of having great classroom management. Furthermore, I believe having consistency within your teaching will help to create great classroom management. As simple as staying consistent on the cell phone policy, and the change out policy with each student everyday will set a good tone with the class. Also having consistency in your daily routines will also impact classroom management in a positive way such as establishing squads with the students at the beginning of the year and staying consistent on students getting into their squads at the beginning of class will increase not only student engagement but also help to have better transitions into the learning activities of the lesson by not wasting a lot of time on attendance and or managing students.

• Strategies for addressing Goal #2:
This information will be gathered and charted in a bar graph that shows students responses to each question and sees if there were any changes in each group and if so, what may be some of the compounding factors that potentially caused the changes. Though the surveys are self-assessment surveys, the teacher will have the final say as to where some students fit in each section. The potential answers to each section are yes, sometimes, no, and I don’t know. Students are to circle where they believe they fit in response to each of the 10 questions on the survey. Baseline data has been gathered and will be matched with the further data that is in the process of coming. A comparison will be done at the end of the project period where the bar graph will show the difference between each sport and the variation from beginning to end. It is in the hopes that students will take the survey seriously and not simply circle answers in a rapid-fire uninterested fashion.

Results

Throughout my Internship I have worked on trying to achieve my goals as often as I could. One of my main goals was to increase student engagement through using classroom management strategies. I believe that I was able to achieve this by creating relationships with each student and classes as a whole. I was able to create strong relationships with my students by participating with the class during the activities, talking with student at lunch time supervision, and helping out with extra-curricular activities at the school. Furthermore I also learned from the start that consistency is really important within classroom management as it creates an environment that students can thrive in. With routines and consistency, a well-managed classroom is perhaps even more important to students than to teachers because it gives them a sense of security. In a consistent classroom, students know from day to day how the classroom is structured and organized. Therefore at the beginning of every day I would let the students know of what we will be doing in class with having an agenda on the white board and making sure to go over it before we begin our activities.
