Instruction
Over the past 5 weeks that I was at Dr. Gerald Probe Elementary School I have had the opportunity to try many different instructional approaches. As this was my first real time teaching students in a classroom for half an hour to an hour sometimes, of course not many of my initial strategies and ideas worked so well, some of them worked great, and some didn’t work so well and I made sure to take notes down to work on better teaching strategies.
My main challenge throughout the first half of the practicum, was trying to figure out how much information to teach to the students at one time, as well as the best way to get that information to the students, while also making sure to challenge the top students in the class without making it too tough for the other students. During my first week of teaching I thought that the best way to teach students was to give out worksheets for them to do following my lecture, which was in better words lacking intriguing and engaging material. As the lessons went out, I realized that the material wasn’t the problem, but rather the manner that I was trying to teach it was less engaging, and therefore I decided to begin to use some fun videos, songs, and games to help students better learn the material that they were presented with, rather than simply working on their worksheets at their desks.
